Lawn & Garden

Gardening is considered our nation's most popular pastime, yielding fresh fruits and vegetables for the dinner table, a cleaner environment and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. North Carolina Cooperative Extension helps gardeners learn more about new plants, native plants and environmental stewardship. Extension-trained Master Gardener volunteers are instrumental in these efforts, sharing their knowledge of plant selection, cultural practices and pest management with fellow gardeners, school students and others.

Master Gardener volunteers are part of the volunteer staff of NC State University's Cooperative Extension Service. They are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, and gardens. They provide unbiased, research based educational assistance and programs in horticulture and environmental issues to the gardening public. Visit the Extension Master Gardener web site to learn more.

Pest Alert... Fall Armyworms!

In the past few weeks, fall armyworms have been spotted in many eastern North Carolina lawns. Their appearance is much sooner than in past years. Perking Up Parched Plants

The drought has definitely taken its toll on the county. According to Melissa Hoggard, urban horticulture Extension agent with the Robeson County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, the drought has not only affected the local farmers with greatly reduced crop yields and livestock loss, it has also affected the local landscapes.
