8:30 a.m. Alternatives to Glyphosate for Landscape Weed Control – Dr. Joe Neal, Weed Science Professor and Extension Specialist, NC State University

Glyphosate is the most widely used post-emergence herbicide in landscape plantings. It controls annual and perennial, grass and broadleaf weeds, with little or no soil residual. Yet, currently many property managers are under pressure to find alternatives. While several alternative herbicides are available to landscape managers, none will substitute completely for glyphosate. In this presentation, Dr. Neal will discuss the products available, their properties, uses, and limitations.

9:30 a.m. Tactical Implementation of IPM in the FieldRyan Adams, Extension Associate, Center for Integrated Pest Management, NC State University

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a vital component to controlling weeds, diseases, and insects in turf. Learn how to assess a site to evaluate appropriate IPM tools, including examining overall plant health, understanding pest thresholds and expectations for management, and elements of a successful IPM program. Identification, life cycles, and control of diseases, weeds, and insect of turf will be addressed.

10:45 a.m. Winning the Battle Against Boxwood Blight and other Important Diseases of Woody OrnamentalsDr. Sara Villani, Apple and Ornamental Plant Pathology Extension Specialist, NC State University

Learn how to identify and manage boxwood blight and other diseases of woody ornamentals that were most commonly reported in 2018.

11:45 NCDA&CS Boxwood Blight Update – April Bauder, Field Certification Specialist (Central Region), N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

Review of NCDA&CS nursery regulations regarding selling blight-infected material, and the import requirements for moving boxwood-blight host species into Tennessee and Pennsylvania.

1:15 p.m. Tree Fertility Management – Dr. Barbara Fair, Horticulture Professor and Extension Specialist, NC State University.

Learn the most recent research-based recommendations regarding the types, timing, and reasons for fertilizing trees. Dr. Fair will provide a brief background on plant needs, the philosophy of tree fertilization and then get into the details of the how, when, what and where of fertilizer application.

2:15 p.m. Tree Planting – Dr. Barbara Fair, Horticulture Professor and Extension Specialist, NC State University.

Learn research-based planting techniques to help ensure that your plants will survive well past the warranty period and provide the basis for a sustainable landscape. Dr. Fair will discuss the proper handling of both container-grown and ball and burlap plants (woody plants in particular). You will also learn the newest staking technique that holds down what you really want to hold down- the root ball! These staking and planting techniques are straightforward, can save money and could revolutionize how we install landscape plants. Outside demonstration, weather permitting.
