The Extension Master Gardener℠  volunteers of Currituck County are presenting their next educational program in their Speakers Bureau Series entitled “Fall Gardening” on Thursday, July 18, 2019, at 9 a.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center in Barco.

Even though it is the middle of the hot summer, it is the perfect time to start thinking about planting a fall garden. Many vegetables are well adapted to be planted in the summer for a fall harvest. Planting a fall garden will extend your gardening season, allowing you to continue to harvest fresh produce once earlier crops have finished. The fall harvest can be extended even further by providing protection from early frosts or by planting in cold frames or hotbeds. Growing a productive fall vegetable garden requires thoughtful planning and good cultural practices. July and August are the best times for planting a fall garden.

Whether you are new to gardening, or a seasoned pro, you will want to attend this free educational presentation presented by Mr. Tommy Grandy, retired Agriculture Extension Agent for Currituck County. Mr. Tommy has years of experience with field crops, tree fruit, and most importantly vegetables!

Mr. Tommy plans to cover the following topics in his presentation:

  • Preparing your garden for fall/winter produce
  • Variety of vegetables that grow well in the fall and winter
  • Variety selection with respect to disease and insect pressure
  • Timing for planting various vegetables as well as appropriate spacing.

Please join us for a free educational presentation on Thursday, July 18 at 9 a.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center in Barco.
