The Caldwell County Agricultural Fair Board and 4-H announced a new camp scholarship at a county-wide 4-H meeting Tuesday, August 27, 2019. The meeting discussed details related to the upcoming fair and the organization’s volunteer program.

Ron Lackey, current fair board president, said the camp scholarship will be available to youth through the Caldwell County Agricultural Fair Board. The criteria for applying includes that youth be exhibitors at the Caldwell County Agricultural Fair; be enrolled in Caldwell County 4-H and in good standing with the organization; be active in a 4-H club, practicing leadership, citizenship and life skills; fully complete the application; and turn it into the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Caldwell County Center by January 20, 2020. The winner will be announced at a 4-H achievement celebration in early 2020.

The camp scholarship may be applied to any North Carolina state 4-H camp (Millstone 4-H Camp, Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center, and Eastern 4-H Center) attended during summer 2020.

In order to meet the first requirement, local youth ages 5-19 will exhibit at the Caldwell County Agricultural Fair on September 17-21. Sarah Moyer, Caldwell County 4-H Agent, explained to club members that the fair is a time to try and put their best foot forward in terms of project work, come together as a county 4-H program and publicize what members are learning by doing.

4-H Saddle Club and Baton Bears 4-H Club signed up to have booths on display at the fair. Additional clubs wanting a booth need to sign up with Sarah Moyer by Thursday, August 29 at 5 p.m.

The fair theme is “There’s no place I’d rather be than the Caldwell Agricultural Fair.” Youth guidelines for exhibiting and entry forms were distributed. Failure to follow the guidelines has great potential to affect placings.

After a short break, Moyer talked about volunteer background checks. All 4-H volunteers who may work directly with youth in any unsupervised capacity; handle money, budgets or funds; or drive youth are required to complete and pass a background check and have an account on file with the county through 4HOnlineThey have to be renewed every two years, and it is a different process now than it has been in the past.

Lastly, attendees were reminded that community and youth surveys for Caldwell County 4-H are available online and at the Extension center. Anyone in Caldwell County ages 5 and up are invited to take a survey, regardless of association or lack of association with 4-H. The surveys correlate to the organization’s volunteer campaign aimed at improving volunteer resources, utilization and experiences within the organization.
