A Bittersweet Farewell and a Grateful Heart

(Updated: March 10, 2026, 10:44 a.m.)

This article is bittersweet for me to write. On February 1, 2026, I will begin a new chapter in my book of life—retirement. After more than 49 years in the workforce, stepping away from a career that has been so fulfilling brings a wide range of emotions–gratitude, pride, and reflection are foremost among them.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work for several businesses and organizations, but without a doubt, I can say how honored I have been to serve as an employee of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center. This organization, and the Robeson County partnership that supports it, represents the very best of public service. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to work in the capacity of Family and Consumer Sciences Agent—a role I have often described as “the best job in the world.” I truly loved what I did, and I did what I loved.

I owe sincere thanks to Mac Malloy, County Extension Director, who gave me the opportunity to serve in this position. His support, encouragement, and coaching throughout my journey made all the difference. I am also deeply thankful to Dalton Dockery, District Extension Director, for believing in me and continuing to support me in this role. Additionally, I extend my appreciation to Kellie Blue, Robeson County Manager, whose support of the work we do at N.C. Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center, has strengthened our ability to serve the people of Robeson County.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Agent position is more than a job—it is a crucial resource for our community. It provides research-based information and meaningful programming that helps individuals and families live healthier, more active lives. I strongly encourage anyone who is qualified and passionate about building partnerships, building relationships, working with people, and making a difference in the community to consider applying for this position when it becomes available. The opportunities to serve, connect, and positively impact lives in the community are truly amazing and rewarding.

As I turn the final page on this chapter, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the incredible staff at the Robeson County office. It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside such a dedicated, caring, and supportive team. Many of you are more than colleagues—you are truly my friends. Together, we have shared challenges, successes, laughter, tears, and a common commitment to serving this wonderful county and its people. While I am closing this chapter, I do so with immense pride and gratitude.

The next chapter is calling me to warmer weather, where I can put my toes in the sand, a book in my hand, and relax on the beach when I’m not traveling. Though I may be retiring, my appreciation for this organization, this county, and the people I’ve worked with will remain with me always.

Thank you for the memories, the partnerships, the friendships, and the opportunity to serve.
