According to Mac Malloy, Extension Field Crops Agent with North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center, a list of pesticide training opportunities to be held at the O. P. Owens Agriculture Center, 455 Caton Road, Lumberton, has been released. These trainings will provide recertification credit towards private applicator and commercial ground applicator licenses. Specific categories are approved for each training as listed below. Commercial ground applicators must receive all required recertification credits by June 30 if their certification expires in 2023. Private applicators (farmers) must receive all required recertification credits by September 30 if their certification expires in 2023. Applicator credit status can be checked online.
Making Good PPE Choices – Tuesday, June 6, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. (2 hours) – This training will cover the principles of proper personal protective equipment selection, use, and care. Training will be in category X for private applicator recertification and in categories A, B, D, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, and T for dealers and commercial applicators.
When a Pesticide Doesn’t Work – Tuesday, June 6, 6 :00– 8:00 p.m. (2 hours) – This training will focus on the top reasons why a pesticide application may fail and ways to avoid them. Training will be in category X for private applicator recertification and in categories A, B, D, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, and T for dealers and commercial applicators.
Proper Pesticide Use Workshop – Tuesday , June 13, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. (4 hours) - Topics include fundamentals of planning an application, mixing, and loading pesticides, reducing spray drift, sprayer nozzle selection, and calibration. Training will be in category X for private applicator recertification and in categories A, B, D, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, and T for dealers and commercial applicators.
Pesticide Hazards and First Aid – Friday, June 23, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. (2 hours) – This training will cover the potential hazards associated with pesticide exposures, symptom recognition, and first aid. Training will be incategory X for private applicator recertification and in categories A, B, D, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, and T for dealers and commercial applicators.
How to Avoid an Investigation – Monday, June 26, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. (1 hour) – This training will be held online via live Zoom and will highlight some of the common issues found during pesticide investigations. Participants will be required to have a webcam to remain on during the training using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. The Zoom app must be downloaded on your device prior to the training. Training is approved for category X for private applicator recertification and in categories A, B, D, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, and T for dealers and commercial applicators.
Private Applicator Soil Fumigation Training (Z) – Tuesday August 1, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. (1 hour) – This training will provide an overview of the requirements for safe and proper fumigation use for private applicators.
Private Applicator Recertification V Training – Tuesday, August 1, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. (2 hours) - This training will provide private applicators with an update on new label changes and restrictions, protection of pollinators, FieldWatch/Driftwatch, auxin herbicides, Worker Protection Standard revisions, herbicide resistance, and the importance of good spray water quality. Recertification credits for Private Applicator category V have been approved.
Safe Pesticide Transport and Storage – Tuesday, August 1, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. (2 hours) - This training will provide an overview of proper transport, security, and storage of pesticides. Training is approved for category X for private applicator recertification and in categories A, B, D, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, and T for dealers and commercial applicators.
Private Applicator Recertification V Training – Tuesday, September 26, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (2 hours) - This training will provide private applicators with an update on new label changes and restrictions, protection of pollinators, FieldWatch/Driftwatch, auxin herbicides, Worker Protection Standard revisions, herbicide resistance, and the importance of good spray water quality. Recertification credits for Private Applicator category V have been approved.
Spray Drift Management – Tuesday, September 26, 1:00 – 3;00 p.m. (2 hours) - This training will provide an overview of best management practices to reduce spray drift. Training is approved for category X for private applicator recertification and in categories A, B, D, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, and T for dealers and commercial applicators.
Pest Management Update – Tuesday, December 5, 2023, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (2 hours) - This training will provide an update of common issues found in turf and ornamentals and strategies to manage them. Training is approved for category X for private applicator recertification and in categories D, L, and N for dealers and commercial applicators.
