Two Opportunities for Small Farmers in NC

(Updated: Nov. 7, 2024, 6:25 a.m.)

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has two opportunities for small farmers across North Carolina.

The first is a solicitation for NC small farmer participation in a virtual Specialty Crop Focus Group, which will be held via Zoom on July 19th at 6:30 pm.  The focus group – a component of North Carolina A&T State University’s Evans-Allen project entitled "The Economics of Expanding Specialty Crop Production in North Carolina for Small and Socially-Disadvantaged Farmers" –   will address issues that farmers in NC face and specialty crop production.  You must be a farmer in North Carolina to participate.  Farmers will receive a $25 Target gift card for attendance.

Registration to participate in the focus group should be made no later than July 16 by emailing Mrs. Jarvetta Bynum at jsbynum@ncat.edu.

The researchers of the project are Dr. Obed Quaicoe, Dr. Kenrett Jefferson-Moore, and Jarvetta Bynum, MS.  They have also received funding for a grant entitled "Small Farmers Value-added Agricultural Opportunities" from the Tobacco Trust Fund Commission. Through the grant, they are able to offer the second opportunity for small farmers.

The second opportunity is a stipend of $480 to assist small farmers with work on the farm or items purchased to promote value-added or agritourism.  Preference will be given to former tobacco growers and minority farmers, but it is not limited to only those farmers.  Awards are based on a first come first, served basis.

Please contact Mrs. Jarvetta Bynum at (336) 508-1229 or jsbynum@ncat.edu with any questions or for help registering for focus group or applying for grant stipend.
