Extension Master Gardener℠ Association of Cleveland County Scholarship

The Extension Master Gardener Association of Cleveland County is committed to sustainable gardening, soil health, environmental soundness, and community involvement. We support education and outreach to local growers of food, flowers, shrubs, and trees. In offering this scholarship, we hope to further the education of young people who share our values.

This $1,000 scholarship is available to a high school senior in the Cleveland County School District who is preparing to enter post-secondary education in the fall following high school graduation. To qualify, the student must:

  • Have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  • Plan to major in horticulture, agriculture, plant science, botany, forestry, landscape architecture/design, or another gardening-related field.
  • Include a letter of recommendation from a teacher who has taught this student within the last two years.
  • Include a letter of recommendation from a non-related personal reference.
  • Include a transcript listing courses taken and grades received, for seven semesters.
  • Be accepted into an accredited two- or four-year college or university and be enrolled for the coming fall semester.

Cleveland County Cattlemen’s Association Scholarship

The Dallas Ward Memorial Scholarship was established by Cleveland County Cattlemen’s Association in 2000 with initial funding provided by members and the local agribusiness community. Scholarships are awarded in $500 increments depending upon number of qualifying applicants and availability of funds.

The scholarship is named in memory of Dallas Ward, son of Grady & Barbara Ward who raised purebred Angus cattle in Upper Cleveland County. Dallas was an exceptionally optimistic, talented, and caring young man. His goal in life was to become a veterinarian. While a junior majoring in animal science at NC State University, Dallas was killed in a tragic automobile accident while driving home for the weekend. Since 2004, more than 80 awards totaling $72k have been made to deserving students pursuing college degrees in fields of study related to agriculture.

Eligibility

  • Graduating seniors from any of the high schools in Cleveland County pursuing a baccalaureate or associate degree who have demonstrated a strong interest in beef cattle production.
  • Priority will be given to applicants whose family are active CCCA members.
  • Priority will be given to applicants who are pursuing a degree in agriculture with an emphasis in beef production.
  • Previous winners may reapply and will be considered on the basis of academic merit in college and financial need.
